Manchester does Christmas on a big scale. The headline is the Manchester Christmas Markets, with more than 210 stalls across ten city-centre sites. But the actual joy of Christmas in Manchester is the breadth: the Skate Manchester ice rink at Cathedral Gardens, the after-dark light trails at Dunham Massey and Tatton Park, Lightwaves Salford’s light art at the Quays, the panto at the Opera House and The Lowry, Christmas afternoon tea at the Midland Tea Room, Manchester Cathedral’s Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, the Bridgewater Hall playing Love Actually in Concert on 15 December, and pop-up bars such as Bar Hütte’s karaoke huttes on Deansgate. From the first Friday of November through to early January, Manchester just gets on with being a great festive city.

This is the 2026 guide to Christmas in Manchester — everything beyond the markets. Light trails, ice skating, pantomime, festive afternoon tea, family activities, Christmas Day options, and the brilliantly underused free Christmas events. For the Christmas Markets in detail see our dedicated markets guide. For NYE see our NYE guide.

Manchester Christmas Markets (summary)

The headline attraction. More than 210 stalls across ten city-centre sites, free entry, run by Manchester City Council. Albert Square is the flagship, with the 50-metre Ferris wheel; the square came back into the Christmas celebrations in 2025 after a six-year absence. Cathedral Gardens is the family hub (with the ice rink). King Street is the upmarket strip; Exchange Square has Porky Pig’s famous Yorkshire pudding wraps. Then there’s the collectable mug: in 2024 it came with a refundable £3.50 deposit, or you could keep it. Full guide: see our dedicated Christmas Markets article.

Christmas light trails around Greater Manchester

Christmas at Dunham Massey (National Trust)

The flagship Greater Manchester light trail. Around 1.7km / one mile through the gardens after dark, with light and sound installations throughout. Runs Friday 20 November 2026 to Saturday 2 January 2027.

Tickets start at £19 adult / £13 child, with under-3s free; prices vary by session, so check family and session prices on the booking page. Parking is pre-book only, with your trail tickets: National Trust members park free when they book in advance, and the booking page shows the non-member charge. 2025 installations included Fish are Jumping, Pixel Trees, Crocus and Star Show, whose giant animated stars stand over five metres high. Allow 1–2 hours for the full trail. Quieter sessions are scheduled on certain evenings (book the 4pm or 4.15pm session). Book early: early-evening and weekend slots are the ones likely to sell out.

Yuletide at Tatton Park

The Cheshire equivalent — 14 Nov to 23 Dec 2026 on selected dates. Entry slots run from 3pm to 7pm; last trail entry is 7pm and the event closes at 9pm. Pricing: off-peak £19.50 adult / £11.50 child; peak £23 adult / £12 child; children aged two and under free. The Yuletide light trail loops through the parkland with a separate Tatton Mansion festive tour and Santa visit available through Tatton Park’s own website.

RHS Garden Bridgewater Glow

The RHS’s Salford garden runs Glow on selected dates from 26 November to 30 December 2026; check the booking calendar for the nights it opens. RHS member tickets start at £6 adult / £4 child, non-member tickets at £9.25 adult / £5.50 child, and under-fives go free. The 2026 route has been reimagined with new installations, and there’s marshmallow toasting.

Lightwaves Salford

The under-used gem. Lightwaves Salford is an outdoor light-art festival around Salford Quays and MediaCityUK. The 2025 edition, the 12th, ran over four evenings in early December with 12 light artworks (many interactive — light, music and digital), free and with no booking. Run by Quays Culture: check the Quays Culture and Lowry sites for this year’s dates and times.

Quarry Bank — Enchanted Winter Walk

The other National Trust option. A 30-minute enchanted walk through the Upper Garden, meeting Mrs Claus, with a warming drink. The 4th-floor “Elf HQ” indoor play space (presents, snowball games, soft play, puppet show) is the family hit. Check the National Trust website for current dates.

Christmas lights in the city centre

Manchester Town Hall illuminations across Albert Square; Castlefield’s canalside lights; Northern Quarter pop-up bar light installations; St Ann’s Square Christmas tree; Spinningfields Avenue lights. A free evening walk between them costs nothing and is properly atmospheric.

For the wider Christmas picture: our Christmas Markets guide covers the markets in detail; our NYE guide covers the New Year’s Eve celebrations; our shopping pillar covers Christmas shopping at the Trafford Centre, Arndale, King Street, Spinningfields and the independents. For other seasonal events see our Bonfire Night guide (November) and summer events guide. For everything, see our Manchester events and festivals pillar.

The markets sprawl across ten separate city-centre sites, which catches most first-timers out. Our guide to all ten market locations sorts out which ones are destinations and which are simply corridors.

Most of a market visit is eating and drinking, so it pays to know what things cost before you start. Our Christmas markets food and drink guide has the prices, the £3.50 mug deposit and the dishes that are actually worth it.

The markets are best when they are not overwhelmed, and overwhelmed is predictable. Our Christmas markets tips show you when to go, how to get there and where to park.
