Manchester’s New Year’s Eve was, for a while, a punchline. It was scrappier than London. It was smaller than Edinburgh. It was, finally, a proper Manchester NYE again. And from 2026, the council has confirmed the firework displays are back permanently.

St Peter’s Square — the headline fireworks

The 2025/26 edition saw Manchester City Council restore the city’s NYE fireworks — and confirmed they’ll be running again for 2026/27 and beyond.

The format: St Peter’s Square hosts the main midnight display, launched from the roof of Manchester Central Library. The fireworks themselves run for approximately 8 minutes, accompanied by lasers and confetti. The event is properly council-organised — free entry, security-controlled, bag searches at the perimeter, no glass, A4 maximum bag size, alcohol-free within the square itself.

Entry typically opens around 10pm. By 11.30pm the square is packed and entry may close. The 2025/26 event drew over 20,000 attendees. Standing-room only; the accessible viewing area is on the Metrolink platform nearest Manchester Central Library (entry via Dickinson Street, next to the Anthologist bar). Portaloos available on the square; Lloyd Street public toilets are open until 1am for additional capacity.

Honest reality check on the fireworks

The 8-minute display is genuinely well-staged but is not on the scale of London or Edinburgh. Some 2025/26 attendees described it as “anticlimactic”; others as “exactly the right size for a free city event.” Manage expectations: this is a proper municipal display, not an internationally-televised one. The location is the highlight — fireworks against the Town Hall and Central Library backdrop is properly iconic.

Albert Square — the alternative free event

The companion event at Albert Square has a Ferris wheel (the same wheel from the Christmas Markets), food market stalls, festive drinks, fairground rides and selfie spots. No fireworks here — the firework display is St Peter’s Square only — but the atmosphere is properly festive, more family-friendly, and less crowded for the actual midnight moment.

Each square has separate capacity and access points. There is no through-route between St Peter’s Square and Albert Square during the event — they’re treated as separate venues. If you want to do both, do Albert Square earlier (8-10pm) and head to St Peter’s Square for the fireworks.

Manchester fireworks: the honest reality

Quick timeline: Manchester ran annual NYE fireworks until 2018. Cancelled in 2020 (COVID) and 2021 (vaccine passports). The fireworks returned in 2023, with the council also confirming Bonfire Night displays will return permanently from 2026 (see our Bonfire Night guide).

The single biggest NYE electronic event in the UK. The Warehouse Project at Depot Mayfield consistently sells out within hours of tickets going on sale (September release for the December event). Hidden

The Mary Street club. Proper club setup with quality sound system; quality DJs (drum & bass leaning); tickets around £20-35.

Metrolink (CRUCIAL READING)

• Bee Network Metrolink runs an amended NYE service — extended from 6am, every 12 minutes until ~1am.
• Important: after 9pm NO trams run through St Peter’s Square — no service between Deansgate–Castlefield and Market Street / Piccadilly Gardens / Exchange Square. Use alternative routes (e.g. tram to Cornbrook then onwards) or walk.

Taxis and Uber
